Our research builds on and extends earlier work on keyboard emanations:
Asonov and Agrawal, "Keyboard Acoustic Emanations," IEEE S&P 2004 - demonstrated that individual keys produce distinguishable sounds, but required labeled training data from the target keyboard
Song, Wagner, and Tian, "Timing Analysis of Keystrokes and Timing Attacks on SSH," USENIX Security 2001 - showed that inter-keystroke timing over SSH leaks information about typed text
Berger et al., "Dictionary Attacks Using Keyboard Acoustic Emanations," ACM CCS 2006 - extended our work to dictionary-based attacks with improved accuracy on passwords
Since our publication, several groups have continued research in this area, including work on emanations from touch screens, ATM keypads, and mechanical locks.
